The house was built in 1907 for Mr. Walter Kippen (proprietor), of the
now defunct Klondike Hotel in downtown Victoria. Birdcage walk was the bridge
and walkway across the water to the old Birdcages Government Buildings, with
the last one burning down in March of 1957. The present building first opened
in 1898 and was totally completed in 1907. The bridge was torn down where
now is located the causeway and the bay area to the east filled in and the
Empress Hotel built in 1908 and Government Street lengthened to include Birdcage
Walk. |
